“Thanks for your help. I really liked your holistic approach, including the broad range of questions you asked about David's overall health and health history. Before coming to see you, David was constantly unwell during winter, coming down with something every couple of weeks and having repeated courses of antibiotics. His health dramatically improved last winter, so much so that he was keen to come back this winter if he started to get sick again. That hasn't been necessary, but we'll definitely be back if we need to.”

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a method of treatment that supports the body's own healing mechanism. It was developed over 200 years ago by a German doctor who became disheartened with the conventional treatment practises of his time.

It is based on the law of similars “like cures like”. A homeopathic remedy is a pure, natural substance that has been diluted many times. In large quantities these substances would cause the same symptoms that the patient is trying to cure. For example: Allium Cepa is a remedy made from the red onion. It is is used for watery eyes and runny nose (typical symptoms of the common cold – for some). If you've cut open a red onion you'll notice the same symptoms. When the body creates a similar “symptom picture” to Allium Cepa and you take a dose of homeopathic Allium Cepa, it activates the body to go about the process of balancing itself and, therefore, reducing or eliminating the symptoms.

Constitutional and therapeutic remedies

We might talk to you about a constitutional remedy, which means a remedy that takes into account the whole person. A constitutional remedy is one that works on a deep cellular level to bring the body and emotions back into state of health and balance. By doing so it makes the whole system more resistant to disease. Alongside a constitutional remedy we might prescribe a therapeutic remedy – this means a remedy that will work on a specific area doing a specific thing, e.g. a remedy to drain fluid from behind the ear drum.

How to take a homeopathic remedy?

Remedies should be stored in a cool, dark place away from strong smells and electromagnetic devices like cell phones, fridges and microwaves. The use of strong-smelling substances like perfumes, eucalyptus, menthol and strong mints may also antidote remedies. Avoid eating, drinking or teeth cleaning 15 minutes before or after taking a homeopathic medicine. When taking a dry dose try not to touch the pillules when taking them but tip one onto a clean spoon and then into your mouth. Ideally, they should dissolve under your tongue but with children this isn't always possible and if they chew them it is ok.
